Obituary

William Hazel Jr. was born May 20, 1926 near Fairview, South Dakota, the son of William and Annie (Herman) Hazel. He attended rural school near Hudson, South Dakota. He married Marilyn Engels on October 13, 1946. Following their marriage they farmed in the Hudson, Centerville and Beresford areas. They had 1 son, Darwin. In 1957, they moved to the farm North of Beresford, where he remained until a stroke prevented him from continuing the farming that he so loved. In 1998, he moved to the Sunny Crest Independent Living Center in Sioux Falls. He continued to visit the farm weekly while he was able to drive. In May, 2013, Bill moved to the Centerville Rehab and Therapy Center in Centerville, SD. He enjoyed riding his "scooter" throughout the halls of both homes. He and Marilyn enjoyed the farm, dances, traveling, and socializing. They spent many hours camping and fishing with the grandchildren and attending their many events. In his early years, his hobby was repairing TV's and met many friends during those years. Later, at Sunny Crest, Bill played cards every night with a group of people. He participated in the Wii Bowling tournaments, in which he and "Bill's Babes" won many times. His family and friends were always a priority. Bill was a member of the United Church of Christ in Beresford and while in Sioux Falls, attended Sunny Crest Methodist church. Bill was a member of the South Dakota Cattlemen's association, had served as a Deacon and Trustee of the United Church of Christ and was a Board Member of Pleasant township for many years. Bill died Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls SD. The family was at his side. He is survived by his son Darwin and wife Carol (Viet), of Beresford, Grandchildren Chad and wife Tara (Keiser) of Beresford and Todd and his wife Kimberly (Huenink) also of Beresford; 3 great-grandchildren, Chloe Hazel, Talen Hazel and Kianna Hazel; 1 brother Raymond and wife Marcia of Hudson; 2 sisters, Jennie West of Sioux Falls and Clara Larson of Lakeville, Minnesota; 2 sister-in laws, Lois Hazel of Baltic and Karen and husband Mike Leifgen of Brookings; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn, brothers, Louis Hazel and his wife Garnett; and John Hazel, sisters, Wilma Ronsiek and her husband Harold; Nellie Keizer and her husband Sam, brother-in-law William Engel, and 3 nephews, Vince Ronsiek, Paul Larson and Jim Keizer. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM, Friday, December 13, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Beresford. Burial will be at the Worthing Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 6PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with a prayer service at 7PM.
