Wayne Murphey Wastell was born June 7, 1915 in Barton County, MO to parents Ernest Charles and Sina May (Murphey) Wastell. He died Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Bethesda of Beresford at the age of 100 years, five months and 10 days.
Wayne was the 11th of 12 children. He attended country school and worked on the family farm. In 1935, the middle of the Great Depression, Wayne followed some of his older brothers to South Dakota to work on area farms. On April 21, 1938 he married Lucille Carlson. They farmed northeast of Beresford for many years. In the early 1990's they moved into Beresford and Wayne continued to help his son, Gerald, on the farm for a few years. He entered Bethesda in 2010.
He enjoyed farming, bowling and playing cards, mostly Pitch.
Survivors include his one son, Marvin (Corinne) Wastell of Omaha; one daughter, Wilma Johnson of Beresford; one daughter-in-law, Darlene Wastell of Beresford; nine grandchildren, Kevin Wastell, Todd (Angie) Wastell, Terry (Stacy) Wastell, Craig (Kerri) Wastell, Andrea (Brad) Ackermann, Blaine (Ellen) Wastell, Chad (Anna) Wastell, Steven Johnson and Sherry (Stephen) Vandre; 21 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. His parents; wife, Lucille; one son, Gerald; son-in-law, Loren Johnson; five brothers and six sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Wayne will be 2PM Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Beresford United Church of Christ with burial to follow at Beresford City Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8PM Friday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 5-7PM and a prayer at 7PM.
