Wava M. Homandberg, 89, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2019 at Ava's House in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services will be 2:00PM Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester, SD. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday, November 13 at Nathanael Lutheran Church, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
Wava Maureen Hagen was born September 21, 1930 in Hawarden, IA to Lawrence and Opal (Thormodsgard) Hagen. She was baptized at Lands Lutheran Church in Hudson, SD. She attended Moe School from 1937 to 1944. She graduated from Hudson High School and attended Springfield Teacher's College. She worked at the Lincoln County Courthouse after college.
Wava married Elmer Homandberg on June 14, 1950 at Hudson Lutheran Church. They moved to a farm near Hudson, SD. Wava and Elmer raised 6 children and worked the farm together. Wava and Elmer lived on farms near Beresford from 1951 to 1964 and then moved to farms near Alcester in 1964. As her children grew up, she enjoyed working in the kitchens at Morningside Manor and the Beresford Public School.
Wava moved to Alcester Village in February of 2018. Her beloved Elmer passed away on October 29, 2018 after 68 years of marriage. She became a resident of Bethesda of Beresford in September of 2019.
Wava enjoyed square dancing, quilting, coffee parties, bowling, baking, watching the Twins and going to the Casino on her birthday. She was an active member of Nathanael Lutheran Church where she participated in WELCA. She enjoyed socializing with the Friendly Hour Club and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hudson.

She is also survived by her sister, LeAnn Knudson, Centerville, SD; sister-in-law, Vonda Hagen, Sun City, AZ; a special aunt, Bonnie Hagen; uncle, Ken Carlson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; 2 daughters, an infant and Melanie Sue Homandberg in 2009; a granddaughter, Katherine Vandemore; her parents, Lawrence and Opal Hagen; her in-laws, Nels and Myrtle Homandberg; her brothers, Wayne "Bud" (Ardell) Hagen and Glen Hagen; and her sister, Virginia (Harry) Hoben.
Memorials may be directed to Nathanael Lutheran Endowment Fund, the Alcester Senior Citizens or the Alcester Community Foundation.
