She was raised and educated in Alcester and confirmed at Nathanael Lutheran Church. Vivian thought more of others than herself and was a very optimistic lady. She loved going to yard sales where she bought furniture to furnish her apartments and clothing that made her look like the most stylish of models. Vivian loved her church; she played the organ at Nathanael for many years. She worked at Sioux Steel in Sioux Falls from 1933 until 1946. She married Lester Engebretson March 11, 1944 in Sioux Falls. Following Lesters death in 1946 Vivian returned to Alcester and worked at the State Bank of Alcester for 17 years. She married Henry Hoyer in 1963 and they moved to Omaha, NE where Vivian worked at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. In 1972 Henry died and Vivian moved to San Diego, CA where she worked as a caregiver for several people. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in San Diego for 30 years, volunteering in the church library, being a circle member and helping with the church newsletter mailings. She decided to come back to her roots in South Dakota September 2006- and was welcomed by everyone. Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, Les Engebretson and Henry Hoyer; brother, Lloyd Tunell; sisters, Evelyn Shoan, Florence Axling and Verna Anderton.
