Virginia Mary Thompson was born on December 4, 1924 on the historic Dolan homestead to Joe and Nellie Dolan. She entered into eternal life on May 26, 2014 at the age of 89 at Sunnyview Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa. Virginia grew up one of seven children at the top of the hill. She graduated from Beresford High School, going on to attend the University of South Dakota, and taught in Beresford following college. On December 29, 1947, she married the love of her life Kenny Thompson, having three children together: Tom, Mary, and Phil. She was very musically gifted and an active member of her parish, singing as the soloist at many weddings and midnight masses at St. Teresa's, she was especially well known for beautiful renditions of Ave Maria and O Holy Night. Virginia followed in her mother's footsteps as an artist; she painted in watercolor, oil, and acrylic. She was also an avid reader, especially enjoying historical novels. Virginia always enjoyed watching and cheering on her children in athletic and musical events. Following the passing of her husband Kenny at age forty-eight, Virginia showed her strength and perseverance with her unfailing support and love for her children. Virginia loved spending time with her four grandchildren, her house adorned with many photos of their smiling faces. Family gatherings were always a source of great joy for Virginia, being able to visit with her beloved family. Her smile and sense of humor were frequently on display, and appreciated by many. We are grateful for the wonderful care given to Mom in the last year and a half of her life at Sunnyview. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Kenny, and her beloved sons Thomas Michael and Philip Kenneth. She is also preceded in death by her parents and sisters Florence, Marjorie, and Eunice, and by many beloved in-laws. Those who survive and gratefully shared her life are her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Roger Andersen of Ankeny, Iowa, daughter-in-law Dana Thompson of Colleyville, Texas, grandson and wife Joe and Riva Andersen of Minnetonka, Minnesota, her grandson Daniel Andersen of Ankeny, IA and grandchildren Grant and Paige Thompson of Colleyville, Texas. Other survivors include sister Lois Ballard of Vermillion, brother Robert Dolan of Beresford, and sister Eileen O'Connor of Sioux Falls, along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends. We are grateful for her 89 years among us, and may she now have a joyous reunion with Kenny, Tom, and Phil, and those loved by Virginia now in the heavenly choir. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Assc. A funeral mass will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, May 30 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford. Visitation will be Thursday at the church from 6PM to 8PM with a wake service at 7PM.
