Virginia Rist, born on June 11, 1940, in Freeman, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, in Centerville, South Dakota. She was a beloved daughter of Gideon and Verlinda (Aman) Handel. Virginia’s journey was marked by her dedication to family, community, and her faith.
Virginia graduated from Freeman High School in 1958 and went on to earn her elementary teaching certificate from Southern State Teachers College in 1960. She began her professional career as a teacher, imparting knowledge and nurturing young minds for five years at Marion Elementary and Viborg Elementary Schools. On June 9, 1962, Virginia married Curtis Rist in Menno, South Dakota. Their union was filled with love and companionship until Curtis's passing in August 2013. Together, they created a family legacy that continues to thrive today.
After raising her two sons, she found joy in working at a daycare and later at a grocery store in Centerville. Ultimately, she embraced her role as a waitress at the Square Deal Café, where her warm demeanor and kindness made a lasting impression on the local community.
Virginia was not only a devoted mother and grandmother but also an active member of Scandia Lutheran Church, where she shared her faith and volunteered her time. She cherished the simple pleasures of life, enjoying coffee and visiting with friends, baking delicious treats, and cooking holiday meals that brought families together. Wintering in Texas for many years, she and Curtis made many good friends that they would visit in the summer with their RV, making memories that would last a lifetime.
Virginia is lovingly remembered by her two sons, Todd Rist of Centerville and Terry (Laura) Rist of Sioux Falls. She will be deeply missed by her two granddaughters, Shalee Stevens and Chelsey Klement; four great-grandchildren, Presley, Harlow and Hank Stevens and Riley Klement; and two sisters-in-law, Corrine Handel and Glenda (Jim) Carlson. She is now reunited with her parents, husband, Curtis Rist; her brother, Ken Handel; and her sister, Patsy Eberle.
Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her, as a woman of strength, compassion, and unwavering love for her family and friends. Virginia leaves behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and the joy of shared moments that will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched.
Virginia Rist will be honored during visitation on March 4, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Wass Funeral Chapel in Centerville. A funeral service will follow on March 5, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Scandia Lutheran Church, also in Centerville.
