Virginia Johnson, 90, of Centerville, SD died Jan. 13, 2015 at Sanford Vermillion Hospital. Funeral services will be 2PM Saturday, Jan. 17th, at Dalesburg Lutheran Church, rural Vermillion. The family will be present from 5-7PM Friday at the church with a prayer service at 7PM. Virginia Roselyn Soderman was born on July 2, 1924 in the Dalesburg Community in Clay County, SD to parents Alfred and Amy (Larson) Soderman. She attended Dalesburg Country School and graduated from Centerville High School in 1942. She was a child of the "Dirty Thirties" and also recalled the floods in the Vermillion River "Bottom" Valley in the 1940's and how they had affected her family. Virginia was the Deputy Clerk of Courts for Clay County in the 1940's. She married Milton Johnson in 1950 and they had one son, Ron. They farmed and fed cattle in the Dalesburg Community their working life. Virginia was baptized and confirmed, and was an active member of Dalesburg Lutheran Church, rural Vermillion. She enjoyed, and was proud, to participate in the congregation's activities, especially its women's ministry. Virginia was involved in the Dalesburg Midsummer Festival all her life and was a member of Dalesburg Scandinavian Association since the 1970's. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and continued to do so into her 80's. She was happy to recall her and her husband's trips to the Western United States and to Sweden and Denmark. In recent years Virginia had been a supporter of Clay County 4-H. In 2014 she had cataract surgery and did not need to wear eyeglasses after having worn glasses over 80 years! She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and her brothers, Howard and John. Virginia is survived by her son, Ron; and nephews and nieces, Gordon Johnson, LeAnne Austin, Carol Carlson, Steve Green and Rev. Doug Green. She is also survived by her Babb, Larson and Gregoire cousins and other relatives and friends.
