Vernon Newton was born August 18, 1912 in Centerville, South Dakota to parents Charles and Lucille (OConnor) Newton. He died April 15, 2006 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 93 years. Vernon graduated from Centerville High School in 1931. He entered the United States Army in 1944 and served until his honorable discharge. He owned and operated a trucking business from 1945 to 1969. He then worked for various trucking firms for the next eight years. He then retired from trucking and worked for area farmers. Vernon was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville and the Centerville American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers. He is survived by 3 nieces: Kathy Mark and husband Greg of Lake Crystal, MN; and Madeline and Joann Newton, both of Sioux City, IA; nephew Michael Newton; great nephew Andrew Mark of Sioux Center, IA, great niece Kristi Renken and husband Jeff of Sioux Falls; great-great niece Kaitlin Renken; and 2 sisters-in-law: Mary Newton of Sioux City, IA and Gerri Brown of Bangor, Maine. Funeral services will be 11AM, Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville with burial at Riverview Cemetery, rural Centerville. Visitation will Tuesday from 5PM to 8PM with family present from 7PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville.
