Obituary

Verlyn Rich Johnson, 62, died on Monday, March 20, 2006 in Los Angeles, Calif. Verlyn, son of Elmer and Alice (Erickson) Johnson was born in Canton, SD on Nov. 22, 1943. He attended Beresford schools, graduated from Brookings High School in 1961 and Augustana College in 1965 with a business major. He was athletic and played basketball. Also, with a love for baseball, he coached Hartford teen teams during those summers. In 1965 he moved to Fullerton, Calif. where he continued to reside. He joined the Air Force Reserves, receiving his training in San Antonio, TX as a medic. Verlyn worked several years as a bank examiner, traveling the western states. Then he worked as an insurance auditor for 30 years, retiring in 1999, due to health problems. He also loved antiques, buying and selling them for many years. He is survived by three sons, Greg, Scott, Shaun, Kevin; one grandson all in Calif.; his sister Janice Hedeen and aunt Elvera Kinkner, both of Beresford; six nephews and nieces and their families; and several cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents, Elmer and Alice. A memorial service will be held in Beresford, SD at a later date this spring.
