Valarie Mae (Smith) Fischer was born on September 19, 1942 in Centerville, SD to parents William and Evelyn Smith. She entered into death on May 7, 2014 at the age of 71 years, seven months and 18 days at Pioneer Memorial Hospital where she was under hospice care after a courageous four year battle with cancer. Valarie's mother Evelyn married Ray Christensen on October 10, 1951 in Viborg. They raised her in the Hurley area through the 8th grade. They moved to Custer where Valarie attended high school until her senior year when they moved to Viborg, South Dakota where Valarie received her High School Diploma. Valarie married the love of her life, Glen Fischer, on June 11, 1960. Together they raised their four children in Centerville where they owned and managed Recreation Lanes, a local bowling alley. Valarie later worked as an Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the Law School, at The Market that was Centerville's grocery store and at Tuffy's Day-care. She passionately served as Mayor of Centerville from May 2001 -May 2009. During her term she led efforts to pursue funding to replace the town's outdated sanitation system and connect residents to the Lewis and Clark rural water system. She led the charge for city beautification and city growth through the development of The Millennium Housing Addition. Valarie was a member of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, loved tending to her flowers, bird watching, and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Glen; aunt, Esther Ness of Viborg; her children, John (Bernie) Fischer of Huron, Tammy Guin (Cameron Voegeli) of Beresford, Angie (Dave) Uttecht of Huron, and Jennifer (Darren) Brewster of Mitchell; six grandchildren, Michael O'Brien, Valarie O'Brien, Lauren Uttecht, Andrew Uttecht, Carter Brewster and Chelsea Brewster and many other relatives and friends. Blessed be her memory. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30AM Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville. A prayer service will be 7PM Monday, May 19th, at the church with the family present from 6-8PM.
