Obituary

Thomas Albert Murray was born June 25, 1924 at Pukwana, South Dakota to parents Archie and Clara (Bauman) Murray. He died on September 19, 2014 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 25 days. Tom attended Abild Grade School in the Pukwana area until the family moved to a farm six miles north of Beresford in March of 1937. He then attended Pioneer Grade School where he graduated from eighth grade. He attended Centerville High School for a short time, but he preferred to be home helping his father on the farm. During World War II he and his father farmed while his two older brothers went to war. Because there was a shortage of men, he also helped the neighbors' farm. On May 27, 1946, Tom married Emma Bonine in St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford. They farmed north of Beresford for two years and then northwest of Canton, South Dakota. In 1951 they moved to Perry, Iowa. In 1955 Emma and Tom moved back to a farm in Lincoln County, South Dakota, ten miles north of Beresford and raised their family. While living there Tom also worked part-time at the Standard Station and Truck Town Station in Beresford. In April, 1986 Tom and Emma moved to Geneva, New York where their daughter, Coleen and her family lived. There Tom worked at Red Jacket Orchards and Garden Gallery Nursery. While living in upstate New York, Tom and Emma took up square dancing and danced in several towns in the area. They met and made friends with several New York couples. In August 1994, Tom and Emma moved back to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Tom worked part-time at Randall's grocery store for several years. Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, two brothers, Curtis and Arlo Murray, and one sister, Darlene Murray. Survivors include his two daughters, Coleen (Eric) Sonntag, Geneva, New York and Terese Murray, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, four grandsons, Daniel (Melissa) Sonntag, Lewiston, New York, Thomas (Jessica Moore) Sonntag, Stanley, New York, Jeffrey Sonntag and James Sonntag, Geneva, New York and one great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Sonntag, Lewiston, New York and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, September 25 at St.Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6PM to 8PM with a wake service at 6:30 PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
