Funeral services for Stuart will be held at 2:00PM on Monday, January 29, 2007 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester. Visitation will be held from 2:00-8:00PM on Sunday at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester with the family present from 6:00-7:30PM followed by a prayer service at 7:30PM. Stuart Newberg was born October 21, 1932 in Lincoln County, SD on the family farm to parents Arthur J. and Florence L. (Peterson) Newberg. He died January 24, 2007 at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 74 years, three months and three days. Stuart attended East View Country School and graduated from Alcester High School in1950. He worked with his father and for area farmers until he was drafted into the US Army where he served at Ft. Carson, CO and Ft. Knox, KY from 1953 until1955. Stuart returned to work with his father on the farm until they moved into Alcester in 1962. He worked as a Brunswick mechanic for Village Bowl; Stuart also worked for Rons Farm Supply and at the Alcester Golf Course. Stuart married Muriel Hammerstrom in 1973. They had shared fifteen years of marriage until her death in 1987. Stuart worked at a plastics factory and at the grocery store in Alcester. He enjoyed to golf, bowl and play softball. Stuart was a 50-year member of the American Legion and he was awarded a 40-year plaque for reporting the Alcester weather to various news stations. His parents; wife; one brother, Arthur Daryl Newberg and one great nephew, Niles Newberg preceded him in death. He is survived by one brother, Paul (Eddie Leu) Newberg of Akron, IA; two stepsons, Greg (Judy) Hammerstrom of Watertown, SD and Scott (Carol) Hammerstrom of FL; several step grandchildren; four nephews, Craig (Connie) Newberg of San Jose, CA, Brian Newberg of San Jose, CA, Kyle Newberg of Anaheim, CA and Kirk (Debbie) Newberg of Omaha, NE; two nieces, Melia (Brian) Small of Akron, IA and Jewel (Gary) Authier of Sioux City, IA; eight grand nieces and nephews, Craig, Jr., David, Melissa, Noel and Nels Newberg, and Adam, Tyler and Shannon Small.
