Steven Eggen was born in Sisseton, SD to parents Magnus and Delores (Westby) Eggen. He and his sister, Lindsey, grew up surrounded by extended family, sharing many cherished gatherings. He often fondly recalled Fourth of July celebrations that emphasized time together, along with memorable lessons on fireworks safety. His parents inspired in him a lifelong commitment to service and learning.
After finishing his undergraduate studies at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Steve joined the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served as an intelligence officer during the Vietnam and Cold War eras. Along the way, he formed lifelong friendships. His naval career took him to Japan, Hawaii, South Korea, and Washington, D.C., and allowed him to travel throughout Asia, Oceania, and Europe. One of his favorite places he visited was Florence, Italy.
After retiring from the Navy, Steve happily escaped D.C. traffic and moved with his family back to South Dakota to be closer to relatives in the Midwest. He returned to Northern State, earned his master's degree, and began a second career in academics. Steve went on to teach English at Southeast Technical Institute and National American University, both in Sioux Falls.
While stationed far from home in the Navy, Steve began a whirlwind romance with the love of his life, Melissa, carried out through letters and long-distance phone calls with spotty connections. They married in 1983 and went on to raise their daughters, Michelle and Kristin.
Steve loved spending time with his grandchildren and hearing about their lives. He enjoyed learning more about their interests, whether it was hockey, soccer, Star Wars or anything in between.
Steve's family and friends will remember his love of literature and history (how many books can one man own?), travel (thank goodness for grandsons and sons-in-law to help with the luggage), and good food—though the appeal of pickled herring remains debatable. He also delighted in creating holiday decorations and enjoyed settling in to watch science fiction and westerns.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Magnus and Delores Eggen; son-in-law, Ken Van Wyk; brothers-in-law, Jerald Bergman, Mores Bergman, Scott Bergman, and Herb Scheele. He is survived by his wife Melissa Eggen; his sister Lindsey (Richard) Hofer; his daughters Michelle (Chad) Lucius and Kristin (Richard) Uhlman; grandchildren, (Cody Van Wyk, Cade Van Wyk, Joey Lucius, Richard Uhlman, Madison Uhlman, Tyler (Ashley) Howlett, Nathan Howlett, and Bryce (Madison) Zamora; and many nieces and nephews.
