Shirley D. McVay was born February 23, 1931 in Akron, IA to parents Harry and Annie (Beckman) Hartman. She passed away on July 10, 2014 at Canton-Inwood Memorial Hospital at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 17 days. Shirley graduated from Alcester High School and attended Nettleton Business School in Sioux City. Following business school she worked at the State Bank of Alcester. Shirley married Daryle McVay on November 3, 1953. They farmed in the Beresford area and then lived in California for a few years, returning to South Dakota in 1962. Shirley worked at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford for over 28 years, retiring in 2006. Daryle passed away in February of 2010 and Shirley continued to reside here until the present time. Shirley was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester and later became a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford where she was active in many roles. She also belonged to the Beresford Senior Citizens and enjoyed serving as an officer for their group. Her hobbies and interests included playing cards, baking, and traveling with her friends and sisters. Shirley's greatest joy in life was her family as she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and three brothers. She is survived by 5 children, Darla (Dana) Wilson, Hudson, SD, Kelly McVay, Beresford, SD, Tami (Joe) Zerr, Aberdeen, SD, Lori (Robert) Padmore, Sioux City, IA and Amy (Bryan) Kauchich, Boise, ID; six grandchildren, Annie (Michael) Crist, Cody and Jesse Wilson, Michael and Haley Zerr and Jack Padmore; two great grandchildren, Carley and Ryan; four sisters, Fern Peterson, Florence Green, and Esther (Bob) Berg, all of Alcester, SD and Mary Jean Rogness, Beresford, SD; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 12 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Visitation will be Friday from 5PM to 7PM with a prayer service at 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
