Shirley Jean McKee, age 85, of Alcester, South Dakota passed away the morning of December 25, 2016 surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 14, 1931 in rural Alcester to Carl G. and Beda M. (Berglund/Nordling) Peterson, and was educated at Finn Country School and graduated from Alcester High School in 1949. Shirley married Paul V. McKee on November 29, 1952 in Alcester, and together, they were married for 64 years.
She was active in the Alcester Baptist Church, including teaching Sunday School, Ladies Aid and singing in the choir. Shirley enjoyed baking, sewing - making clothes and quilts, crossword puzzles, playing cards and dominoes, camping and traveling the country. She was a voracious reader, particularly Christian novels and Swedish immigrant stories, along with reading her Bible. She was especially fond of visiting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their activities.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Paul; two sisters, Leona (Earl) Beuckens of Alcester and Winona (Marv) Boles of Florence, MO; two daughters, Paula (Ken) Severson of Richfield, MN and Patti (Kevin) Sebesta of Fort Collins, CO; two sons, Scott (Laura) McKee of Hawarden, IA and Tom (Lavonne) McKee of Alcester; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Severson (Peter) Lesch and Erick Severson, David Sebesta, Matthew Sebesta and Jeffrey (Jenn) Sebesta and Anne Sebesta (Mike) Stapleton, Courtney and Zachary McKee and Jamye and Sydney McKee and 10 great-grandchildren, Madalee and Memphis Sebesta, Jacob, Caleb and Grace Stapleton, Kendall and Jackson Lesch, Stella Severson, and Brooklynn and Bayleigh Sebesta. She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter; Diane, brothers, Emil and Clarence Nordling, Arthur, Leroy, and Raymond Peterson; sisters, Madelyn Osman, Marion Warnkvist, Margaret Binkerd and Frances Beuckens.
Visitation will be 4-8PM Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Alcester Baptist Church, 401 Iowa Street, Alcester. The family will be present from 5-7PM followed by a prayer service at 7PM. Funeral services will be 1PM Thursday, January 5th at Alcester Baptist Church with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester.
