Obituary

Shirley Wulff Jensen was born January 12, 1925 near De Smet, SD. She passed away on November 11, 2015 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 90 years, 9 months and 29 days. Shirley graduated from De Smet High School and Chillicothe Business College in Missouri. After working as a secretary for California Shipbuilding Corp. during World War II, she attended Long Beach State College in Long Beach, CA. On December 2, 1945 she was married to Fred M. Smith. After his Navy service they returned to South Dakota where Shirley was employed as secretary to the President of Huron College and secretary to the Head of Plant Pathology at South Dakota State University until her husband received his Master's Degree and began his career as a football coach and math teacher. They lived in Florida the last 12 years of their of their 25 year marriage. Shirley was employed as a legal secretary 10 months out of the year and spent 10 summers in Wisconsin at Towering Pines Boys Camp as office manager and typing tutor. Her son was enrolled as a camper and her husband was the Program Director. Shirley returned to her home town of De Smet in 1971, where she managed the Kingsbury County Fire Insurance Company and was the first woman appointed to the Board of Directors of the Mutual Insurance Companies of South Dakota. She was also the first woman city commissioner in De Smet. Nationally, she was named to "Who's Who of American Women." On November 23, 1975 Shirley married Ernest Jensen of Beresford and assisted him in his appliance and cattle business. She served for three years as the first Executive Secretary of the Beresford Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the GFWC Progress Study Club. She was an activist for many worthwhile organizations such as Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament, Peace and Justice Center and Christian Women's Club. The Close Up Program sponsored one senior citizen for each of the senators in the United States to attend a seminar in Washington, DC and Shirley was the first one chosen from South Dakota in 1990 as an intern for Senator Tom Daschle. She is survived by her son, Fred Smith, Jr.; two granddaughters, Bobbi Jo and Tamera Kay; and five great grandchildren, Ethan, Uriah, Patrick, Jade and Halina, all of Colorado. Preceding her in death were her parents, Ferde and Karen Wulff, husbands, Ernest Jensen and Fred Smith. Sr., a sister Ruth Swanson, two brothers, Goldwynn Wulff and Orville Wulff, who lost his life in World War II as a pilot, and a brother Curtis, in infancy. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with burial at the Beresford City Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home.
