Shirley A. Jenkins, 87, passed away September 19, 2013 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester, SD. Shirley was born January 23, 1926 in Union County, SD. Her family moved to Alcester where Shirley attended school and graduated from high school in 1944. She then moved to Sioux City, IA and attended Cosmetology School, graduating in 1946. Shirley married Clifton "Kissy" Jenkins on August 20, 1946 in a double wedding ceremony with her mother Roxie and Glen Peterson in Broadus, Montana. Shirley worked in Sioux City as a beautician and at Larson Drug in Alcester for many years. She also helped Kissy with his business from time to time. Shirley was active with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, was the sexton of Pleasant Hill cemetery for many years and was active with the Alcester United Church of Christ Ladies Aid group. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, and camping. She took several bus tours across the United States and was a member of a card club in Alcester. Those left to cherish Shirley's memories are two nieces, Pam Skovlund, Aurora, SD and Pat (Rick) Merkel, Crofton, NE; nephew Mark (Linda) Trandahl, Winner, SD; her cousin Lena Peterson of Alcester; and many other relatives and friends She was preceded in death by her husband Clifton Jenkins, mother Roxie and step-father Glen Peterson, her sister-in-law Norma Trandahl and her husband Allen Trandahl, and her mother and father-in-law Ken and Etta Jenkins. Funeral services will be held 10:30AM, Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Alcester with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 6PM to8PM with a prayer service at 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester.
