Obituary

Shirley Mae (Hedeen) Jacobson was born on January 12, 1950 in Hudson, South Dakota to Earl and Opal (Jones) Hedeen. She passed away in the presence of her husband, Larry, on March 16, 2024 at the Avera Daugherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 74 years. Shirley had been under Avera Home Hospice Health Care for approximately three weeks before entering the Daugherty House on March 12th. She was the third of four children. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, Lawrence and Dorothy Jacobson; her older brother, Dennis Hedeen; her younger brother, Earl Hedeen, Jr.; her sister-in-law, Janice Hedeen; and her sister-in-law, Colleen (Terry) Jacobson.

Shirley grew up in Beresford and graduated from Beresford High School in 1968. That same year she married Larry Jacobson on May 10, 1968; they made their home on Larry's family farm for the next four years while he attended college at the University of South Dakota. Their only son, Scott, was born in 1968.

Shirley worked several jobs including farming (milking cows) before accepting a position with the Federal Lank Bank Association in Beresford. She continued to work for the Farm Credit System for the next 35 years before retiring in 2015. She was a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ in Beresford where she held many positions over the years.

Shirley loved working with flowers and shrubs and was known to have a "green thumb". Her favorite flowers were perennials. She utilized them in the landscaping around their acreage located east of Beresford. She would often take house plants from her workmates and friends that were struggling to survive, bringing them back to life. Shirley was also a voracious book reader and loved rummage sale shopping. She was so good at rummaging, that her workmates at Farm Credit would often place orders for clothes and shoes with her on the days they knew she would be out on the hunt in Sioux Falls. After retirement, her and who she referred to as her "band of angels" would meet for coffee sessions and discuss various topics. Also, during her retirement she was known to be generous with her time helping out with many projects and activities at her church.

She is survived by her husband, Larry, of just under 56 years; her son, Scott, who resides in Missoula, MT; her older brother, Gary (Jan Stubbe) Hedeen of Grand Forks, ND; and a host of relatives and friends. She will be remembered as a kind, gentle, generous person by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be 5-7PM Monday, March 25, 2024 at the Beresford UCC, 109 N 5th Street, with a prayer service at 7PM. A memorial service will be 2PM Tuesday, March 26th at the church.
