Obituary

Memorial services for Shirley Hanson will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 18th at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester. The family will be present Sunday from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Wass Funeral Home, a prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m. Shirley Mae (Lebahn) Hanson was born August 14, 1936 in Winfred, South Dakota to Rudolph and Sophia (Gehm) Lebahn. She passed away unexpectedly from complications of congestive heart failure and cancer on Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Avera Heart Institute in Sioux Falls, SD. Shirley lived in South Dakota until the farmhouse her parents were renting was destroyed by a tornado. She attended the Argonne School through the second grade. Her family moved to Lebanon, Oregon in the spring of 1945 and her father got a job at the Williamette Paper Mill where his brother was employed. She graduated from Lebanon High School and enlisted in the US Air Force in September of 1954. Shirley was stationed at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas where she met and married Robert Elwood Hanson on November 9, 1957. She served three years with an honorable discharge. Shirley spent the next twenty years traveling and supporting Robert in his military career. During Roberts career they were stationed in Japan, Pennsylvania, New York, Okinawa and California where he retired in 1972. They lived in Bellevue, Nebraska until Robert retired from the US Postal Service in 1992. Over the past few years they spent time in Arkansas and moved home to Alcester in 2005. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking, needlepoint and sight seeing. Her kitty, Princess, was a cherished companion and provided her great moments of personal pleasure. Shirley is survived by her husband, Robert Hanson; daughters, DeAnna Lackney and her husband, Dale of Noblesville, IN and Melody Hanson of Bellevue, NE; grandchildren, Crystal, Shelby and Emily; sisters, Bernice Anderson and her husband, Thorwold of Huron, SD and Gloria Elliott and her husband, James of Staton, OR. Her parents and brother, Raymond preceded her in death.
