Ruth Lillian (Weber) Thompson passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024. She was born to parents Elizabeth (Klehman) and Jacob Weber on August 25, 1925 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was educated in Lincoln and upon completion of high school went to work at Gold & Company department store. She met her husband while he was stationed in Lincoln in the Army. Ruth and Calmer were married June 23, 1945 in Lincoln. She continued working while Calmer completed his tour of duty in Japan. They then moved to South Dakota to raise their family and Calmer returned to his duties at First National Bank in Beresford where he worked for 45 years. He became ill and passed away in 1986. They were married for 41 years.
Ruth and Calmer were lifelong members of Emmanual Lutheran Church where they were active members. She was a member of Eastern Star, Extension Club and VFW as well as being active in both Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and assisting at the Elementary schools. She later performed various volunteer roles including quilt sewing at Emmanual, nursing home visitation, and working at the local Senior Center in Beresford. She continued to perform volunteer work until her health no longer allowed.
Those preceding her in death were her husband Calmer, parents Elizabeth and Jacob Weber, sisters Elizabeth, Sarah, Esther and Helen and two brothers Jake and Victor.
She is survived by four children – Diane McLoughlin (Mike) of Fishers, Indiana, Don Thompson (Marie) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Terry Thompson (Linda) of Holmen, Wisconsin, and Betty Jo Lykken (Eldean) of Alcester, South Dakota. Also surviving her are seven grandchildren - Michael Suing, Patrick and Alan McLoughlin, Brian and Troy Thompson, Robin (Lykken) Lockhorst and Shawn Lykken; nine great-grandchildren - Owen and Elowynn McLoughlin, Taylor, Kyle and Caleb Thompson, Lydia and Claire Thompson, Mason and Sutton Lockhorst.
Funeral services will be 2PM Friday, July 5, 2024 at Emmanual Lutheran Church, Beresford, SD with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Emmanual Lutheran Church, 101 S. 5th Street, Beresford, SD 57004.
