Roy Lester Hurd was born May 9, 1924 in Huron, SD to parents Willie and Alice (Grape) Hurd. He died January 18, 2014 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 89 years, 8 months and 9 days. Roy moved with his parents to Sioux Falls in 1926 and in 1939 they moved to Estelline, SD, where he graduated from High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army from January of 1945 to December of 1946, being stationed in Okinawa. Following his return from the war Roy married Joan Oines on March 21, 1947 at Estelline. The couple moved to Beresford in June of 1957 to manage the Co-op Service Association. In 1964 he began working for the Bergman Beresford Lumber Company, retiring in 1986. Roy was baptized in the Huron Methodist Church and was currently a member of the United Church of Christ in Beresford where he served faithfully in many roles. He was also active in many community organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Beresford Cemetery Association, Red Cross, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. Roy was a lifelong member of the American Legion and VFW and served as a volunteer ambulance driver for 35 years. His hobbies and interests included radio controlled model airplanes, woodworking crafts and making outdoor Christmas decorations. Roy is survived by his wife Joan Hurd of Beresford; two sons, Ricky Hurd and wife Vickie of Owatonna, MN and Robert Hurd and wife Jane of Boise, ID; daughter Kathleen Prieve and husband Bob of St. Paul, MN; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Ann Spaar and Betty Jean Stargardt. Funeral services will be held 11:00AM, Thursday, January 23 at the Beresford United Church of Christ with burial to follow at the Beresford Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5PM to 7PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford
