Roger Allen Hansen was born March 25, 1945 in Hooker, SD and passed suddenly during a hospital stay in Sioux Falls, SD on January 26th, 2026, at 80 years and 10 months. His Mother, Dorathy (Hammond) Hansen and father, Raymond Hansen farmed near Viborg, SD until his father's health required different employment. They moved to Sioux City, IA where Ray attended Barber College and Roger started kindergarten. They then moved to Pickstown, SD during the construction of the Fort Randall dam. In 1952, the family moved to Centerville to open Ray's Barber Shop. Living near "the Dam" and Vermillion River was a great place for outdoor adventures with his neighborhood friends, hunting, fishing, trapping, ice skating and was the start of his love of nature. He pitched baseball with his brother Doug as catcher and would later play basketball where his coach would define exceptional opponents on the court as "fireballs". He named his business, "Fireball", with this as his inspiration.
Centerville High School would lead him to his future wife, Nancy Odland with whom he shared three children, Lisa, and twins, Steve and Scott. For years to come, he would retell his "Mayberry-like" childhood experiences in Centerville to his own children, who also grew up along the Vermillion River enjoying many of the same benefits of small town life. Country property along the river south of Centerville was purchased in 1974 and was eventually referred to as "The Hill". Roger and his kids spent countless weekend hours together, mowing, trimming, planting and watering trees to develop a beautiful place for his future home, created from an historic "Depot", moved over 200 miles from Webster, SD.
Being artistic and entrepreneurial, he attended Sioux Falls College majoring in art and business. While in college he worked for Sunshine Foods, where he hand-lettered sale banners, and eventually learned to screen print. A second job of prepping sign boards and his own side business of painting gas station windows, honed his skills. Advertising art positions at Morrell's and Terrace Park Dairy gave him additional valuable experience to eventually start his own business in 1969. In 1971, the business was moved from Sioux Falls to Centerville and has endured for over 56 years, with most of the family being involved at one time or another.
Big game hunts to British Columbia and Alaska were enjoyed and eventually shared through slide presentations to many men's organizations for years after, but South Dakota hunts throughout the state with his boys and grandkids were even more cherished. Special hunts to Newfoundland with his sons and Sand Hill Crane Hunt in Oklahoma that also included grandsons will never be forgotten. Blessed be his memory.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Kate & Al Hammond, Carl & Caroline Hansen.
