Obituary
Roda Mae Sweeney was born October 21, 1931 in Kennebec, SD to parents Cliff and Bertha (Olsen) Halverson. She died August 28, 2010 due to cancer at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 78 years, 10 months and 7 days.
Roda attended Kennebec schools and graduated in 1949. She attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD for two years and received her teaching certificate. She later attended the University of South Dakota and received her Bachelors Degree in 1975. Roda taught school in Winner, Presho, and Beresford. She then taught at Woodfield Center from 1969 to 1996. She also owned and operated Martys Caf in Beresford.
Roda married William Sweeney on November 22, 1951. They resided in Presho until moving to Beresford in 1960.
Roda was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church. She loved teaching, playing cards and bingo, and spending time with family and friends.
Her survivors include her two sons, Duane (Leila) Sweeney of Manassas, VA and Jim Sweeney of Beresford; daughter Jane (Jeff) Norling of Beresford; daughter-in-law Shelley Sweeney of Sioux City, IA; eight grandchildren, Tiffany Gray and Ryan Sweeney, Manassas, VA, Luke Sweeney, Sioux City, IA, Ted (Molly) Norling, Beresford, Tom Norling, Beresford, Katie Norling, Rochester, MN, Tracia (Austin) Hansen, Beresford, and Keaton Sweeney, Beresford; 5 great granddaughters, Taylor, Jadyn, Grace, Ava and Layla; three sisters, Jean (Marlow) Ohman, Sioux City, IA, Jan (Dick) Lien, Kennebec, and Carol (LaVerne) Ehlers, Presho; brother Cliff (Pat) Halverson, Kennebec; brother-in-law Paul Reuman, Presho, SD; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Doug Sweeney, sister Nola Reuman, a brother in infancy, and two grandsons, Joseph and Jacob Norling.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30AM, Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford with burial at St. John Catholic Cemetery, rural Beresford. Visitation will be Monday from 5PM to 8PM with family present from 6PM to 8PM and a gathering at 7:00PM to share stories of Rodas life at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
