Obituary

Roberta Marie Klostergaard

July 24, 1935 – July 10, 2026

Roberta Marie Klostergaard, age 90, formerly of Beresford, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, at Country Lane Retirement Village in O’Neill, Nebraska. Her life was one of devotion to family, faith, community and the many friendships she treasured along the way.

Roberta was born on July 24, 1935, on the family farm in Spink, South Dakota to Everett and Agnes Peterson. Growing up she learned the importance of perseverance, responsibility, and hard work, values that shaped her character and remained evident throughout her life.

After graduating from Alcester High School in 1953, Roberta continued her education at the University of South Dakota, earning her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career at Garland Country School rural Alcester for one year before moving to Lead, South Dakota to teach for an additional year. Teaching reflected her joyful spirit and her desire to encourage others.

On August 23, 1958, Roberta was united in marriage to Marlin “Corky” Klostergaard at Bruel Creek Lutheran Church. They made their home on the Klostergaard farmstead north of Beresford, where they were blessed with three children: Bradley, Marla, and Ann. Roberta was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker, and her family remained one of her greatest joys.

Roberta was seen throughout the community as an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens, playing bridge, golfing, baking and bowling. In her quieter moments, she loved creating ceramics, spending countless hours making heirloom needlework, and antiquing. When her children were young, 4-H was an important part of her family life; she helped with countless projects, served as county fair judge, and enthusiastically supported her children’s and grandchildren’s activities throughout their school years.

For 20 years, Roberta and Corky enjoyed wintering in Texas, where they built lasting friendships and shared many happy days on the golf course.

In her later years, despite dementia, she continued to brighten each day by singing, smiling, and offering hugs to everyone she met. She shared that kindness until her final moments. Her favorite song was “A Bushel and a Peck,” which she sang right up to her last days.

Roberta’s memory will be lovingly cherished by her daughters, Marla (Steve) Meyer of Pensacola, Florida, and Ann (Roger) Filips of Spencer, Nebraska; her daughter-in-law, Linda (Bradley) Klostergaard of Okoboji, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; her sister, Carolyn (Harold) Jones of Elk Point, South Dakota; and her brother, Charles Peterson of Sioux City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marlin “Corky” Klostergaard; her son, Bradley Klostergaard; her sister-in-law, Louise Peterson; and her parents, Everett and Agnes Peterson.

“I love you, a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck, with a hug around the neck!”

Visitation with family will be Monday, July 20, 2026 at Wass Funeral Home from 4:30 – 7:00, funeral services will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 11:00.
