Obituary

Robert Elroy Berg, age 88, of Alcester, SD entered into eternal rest on August 12, 2021.  Robert was born April 1, 1933 to Emil and Sylvia (Hanson) Berg.  He was the only child as his mother passed away when he was young.  Robert graduated from Alcester High School in 1951.  After graduation he drove a gravel truck for Union County until June of 1953, at which time Uncle Sam invited him to join the Army.  His military time was spent flying H-13 helicopters, where he was a crew chief and his job was to keep them flying.  Shortly after returning from the service, he went to work at Great Plains Supply in Alcester.  In 1959 he took a job with the Post Office in Alcester, where he finished his career as the Postmaster in 1995.  After retirement he also worked at Custom Coils to keep active.

Robert married Esther Hartman in 1955.  To this union five sons were born, Kenneth, Brian and Timothy, with twin sons lost in infancy (Keith & Kalvin).  He loved spending time with his boys.  Robert and Esther were married 65 years, until her passing in June of 2020.

Robert and Esther lived in Alcester all of their lives until moving to Sioux Falls in the spring of 2018 due to health concerns.  Robert enjoyed card games, home remodeling, motorcycling, fishing, and trying his luck at the casinos.  He had a strong love for pets, with many small dogs that shared his life.  He and Esther enjoyed RV'ing, mainly traveling to Mesa and Casa Grande, AZ and Bandera, TX in the winter for many years.  They enjoyed socializing with friends and family.  Later in life Robert was able to go on an Honor Flight to see the Washington Memorials.  He loved his country and enjoyed marching and being a lifelong member of the VFW.

Grateful for having shared his life are sons Kenneth (fiancé Lori Horstman) Berg of Sioux Falls; Brian (Kathy) Berg of Sioux Falls; and Tim (Deb) Berg of Rapid City.  Sisters-in-law Mary Jean Rogness, Florence Green and Fern Peterson.  Grandchildren April (Vinny) McCormick, Ashley (Wade) Hargreaves, Jasmine Berg, Keith Berg, and Eric Berg.  Great-grandchildren Logan, Lydia, Lauren and Lainey Hargreaves.

The family wishes to thank the many individuals who cared for Robert, especially his niece Judy Hodne and friend Katlin Lillquist, both of Sioux Falls.  Please join us in celebrating Robert's life in his beloved town of Alcester.  Funeral services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 18th with burial following at the church cemetery. Visitation will begin 1 hour prior to services.

Memorials may be directed to Peace Lutheran Church.
