Ricky Lynn Nothdurft, 63, of Centerville, SD born March 16, 1957 in Sioux Falls, SD to Melvin and Dorthy (Voegeli) Nothdurft of Beresford, SD. He passed away peacefully on May 5, 2020 at the Centerville Care and Rehab Center. Due to the COVID-19 related gathering restrictions, Rick's family will have a private burial now and will host a celebration of life service at a later date to properly celebrate his life with his family and friends.
Rick graduated from Beresford High School and attended Springfield Academy. His passion for farming and livestock brought him back to the family farm, in which, he used his knowledge to enhance his A. I. techniques for cattle and hogs.
Rick was married to Roxanne Rae Sikkink in 1992. They welcomed two beautiful daughters, Stacy Lynn and Sara Rae into the home, who were the most important part of his life. He enjoyed watching the girls grow up and participate in their sports and 4-H activities.
The Sioux Falls Stockyards was where Rick was always found in a conversation about livestock from one farmer to another. He enjoyed making breakfasts and dinners for the cattleman, farmers and the buyers in turn for a conversation about the latest rain fall, crops, or livestock prices. Well known as "Stubby" he enjoyed the cooking at the stockyards, but the road lead him from Sioux Falls to Centerville as he and his wife, Roxanne, opened the Old Street Café. He was a master at grilling beef and pork. It was during this time, that Rick met life-long friends. When he met someone for the first time, he made them feel like they were old friends.
He was honored to be a part of his daughters' weddings and welcome his sons-in-law, Justin Poppenga and Nathan Mortensen into his family. His face would light up when his grandchildren, Hesston Lee Poppenga and Riley Rae Poppenga would visit. He always kept a candy bucket full in his room to share with the grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching the children feed the birds from the bird feeder from his window view. Seeing the children play outside and ride their bikes was the highlight of his life.
He was known for his ability to strike up a conversation, his infectious smile and his kind and compassionate spirit.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife of 27 years, Roxanne; his daughters Stacy and Nathan Mortensen and Sara and Justin Poppenga; grandchildren, Hesston Lee Poppenga and Rylee Rae Poppenga; his mother, Dorthy Nothdurft; siblings, Dan and Roxie Nothdurft, June and David Mohr, Jill Winter and Jim Miller, Dale Nothdurft and Mikel Scholten; his aunts; uncles; cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rick was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Nothdurft; brother, Jeffrey; and his grandparents Hans and Minnie Nothdurft and Erwin and Myrtle Voegeli.
In honor of Rick, strike up a conversation with a stranger and make a new friend.
