Richard E. Sommervold was born April 30, 1935 in Union County, South Dakota to Ole and Evelyn (Larson) Sommervold. He died July 12, 2020 at his home in rural Alcester, SD at the age of 85 years.
Richard was raised on the family farm and attended Garland country school through the 8 th grade. He was baptized and confirmed at Roseni Lutheran Church where he was a lifetime member. After graduating from Alcester High School in 1953 he started farming with his with his parents and brother James. Richard married Marilyn Powell on February 5, 1961. Later that year he was drafted into the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Riley, KS. Following his honorable discharge, Richard returned to South Dakota where he continued farming with his mother and brother.
He was a lifelong farmer, still helping his sons with the harvest last fall at 84 years old. Richard liked to have a cup of coffee and visit with friends and go to farm sales. He and Marilyn enjoyed spending time with friends, family and traveling. Richard liked to collect toy tractors. He enjoyed movies and attending shows at the Washington Pavilion.
His parents, wife, Marilyn; and brother, James preceded him in death.
Grateful for sharing in his life are his four children, Rhoda (Rick) Andersen of Pierre, Bryan (Chon) Sommervold, of Alcester, Dean (Wendy) Sommervold of Alcester and Tammy (Ron Jupiter) Sommervold of Brandon; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Delores Sommervold.
A private family funeral service will be held at Roseni Lutheran Church, rural Beresford, SD. Burial with military honors will follow at Nora Cemetery, rural Alcester, SD.
