Obituary

Richard Newman, 87, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the Hawarden Community Hospital. He was born April 12, 1925 to Ben and Edith Newman. Richard attended Hawarden High School. After graduation in 1943, he volunteered for the US army and served in the Philippines during World War II. After his honorable discharge he returned home and worked for the Iowa Highway Patrol in Guthrie Center. In 1948 he married his high school sweetheart, June Larson. During that time he accepted Christ as his personal savior and was baptized at the First Baptist Church In 1951 Rich and June moved to the farm by Alcester, SD where they lived the rest of their married lives. They had two daughters, Julie and Peggy. He loved farming and being close to nature. Rich and June enjoyed traveling and church activities. He became a member of Big Springs Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and many terms as a deacon and trustee. He was also on the Big Springs County school board and cemetery board. Richard encouraged everyone around him with his kindness and humor. He loved getting to know people and laughing with them. A cup of coffee and some cookies could solve a lot of problems. Being with his family was his favorite thing to be doing. His priorities were God, his family and country. His family cherishes the memories of his faithful love for them which was rooted in Jesus' faithful love for him. He is survived by his wife June; two daughters, Julie (Barney) Blauth, Alcester and Peggy (Greg) Licari, Fremont, CA; grandsons, Andrew (Miriam) Blauth, Sioux Falls, Kevin (Meg) Blauth, Carrboro, NC, three great grandchildren, Isaiah, Maria, and Lydia; and many nieces, nephews relatives and friends. They were also blessed by having step grandchildren Tony Licari, San Jose, CA, Jennifer (Donoven) Martini, Sonoma, CA and their four children Caden, Sebastian, Morgan and Emma Martini. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and brother. Funeral services will be 1:30PM, Tuesday, June 19 at Big Springs Baptist Church, rural Alcester, with burial to follow at Big Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday at the church from 6PM to 8PM with a prayer service at 7PM.
