Obituary

Richard "Dick" Dean Landsman passed away Saturday, October 24th, 2020 at the age of 90 due to complications from Covid-19.  Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, October 28 at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville, SD. Please wear your mask and practice social distancing.  A private family service will be held at a later date.

Dick was born in Flandreau, SD on May 25th, 1930 to Ralph and Lillian (Erickson) Landsman. From there, his family moved to Centerville, SD where he graduated from Centerville High School, then attended South Dakota State University before joining the service.  In October, 1951, Dick enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, CA and sailed on the USS Curtiss AV-4. While in the Navy, he served on two atomic bomb testing missions. Dick came back to marry the love of his life, Priscilla Peterson, on October 14th, 1953, while on leave. They resided in San Diego until his discharge from the Navy in 1955. After his time in the service, Dick and Priscilla moved back to Centerville, the place they both called home. He farmed for most of his life with his dad and brother. He raised cattle and was an avid member of the Livestock Feeders Association, serving some time as President. He was fond of horses and also took part in rodeo. Dick took pride in caring for God's creation and continued farming until retirement.

Dick was a lifelong member of Scandia Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Myrtle Lodge #9 and Ivy Chapter #25 OES in Centerville. He was proud to be a Shriner with the El Riad Shrine of Sioux Falls, as well as a member of the Centerville American Legion, Frank Holcomb Post.   Many of his summers were spent amongst friends and family at their cabin on Swan Lake, fishing for weeks at a time and camping. For over 30 years, Dick and Priscilla enjoyed escaping the cold South Dakota winters to be with their "Texas family" at the Tropic Star Park in Pharr, Texas. Their passion for travel brought he and Priscilla to all but two of the states throughout the United States and more. Dick loved taking pictures and was rarely seen without a camera. He enjoyed ship reunions, browsing auctions, making his way around a dance floor, playing his own rendition of "Ramblin' Rose" on his keyboard with one finger, an early morning cup of coffee and a good conversation. He had a friend wherever he went, and if he didn't, he made one. More than anything, Dick loved his family and anyone who knew him, knew so.

One of the biggest highlights in Dick's life was being part of the Midwest Honor Flight in 2018. Accompanied by his daughter, Joni, he was able to tour Washington D.C. with fellow servicemen and visit the respected war memorials for which he and the other veterans had served.

Later in 2018, Dick and Priscilla sold their family acreage north of Centerville and moved to Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls. They enjoyed their time there and made new friends, but as health concerns became more prominent, they moved to Centerville Care and Rehab Center to feel more at home.

Grateful for having shared his life are his beloved bride of 67 years, Priscilla; two daughters, Joni (Larry) Schuler of Crooks, SD and Kathy (Jon) Peterson of Dell Rapids, SD; five grandchildren, Brad (Sara) Peterson of Sioux Falls, SD; Jared Schuler of Crooks, SD; Angie (Lee) Kaffar of Dell Rapids, SD; Jennifer (Aaron) Norgaard of Bismarck, ND and Katie (Tyler) Hoenisch of Crooks, SD; twelve great-grandchildren, Noah, Matthew and Lily Peterson; Haiden and Madison Kaffar; Avery, Beckham, Oakley and baby girl Norgaard; Carson, Cole and Emma Hoenisch; sisters-in-law, Donna Landsman, Marlys Nelson and Claire Jacobsen; brother-in-law, Ron (Jenny) Peterson, and many admired nieces, nephews and friends.   He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Lillian Landsman; father and mother in-law, Ellsworth and Ida Peterson; brother, Boyd Landsman; sister-in-law, Eldonna Bartlett; brothers-in-law and best friends, Buddy Peterson, Ronnie Bartlett and Noble Nelson.

The family would like to thank the staff at CCRC and Sanford Hospital for their wonderful care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to a charity of your choice. Special ones to our family are the Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association, Centerville American Legion, Shriner's Hospital and Midwest Honor Flight.
