Richard "Dick" Hughes was born September 30, 1933 in Alcester, SD to parents Richard L. "Pete" and Emma (Numsen) Hughes. He died December 16, 2014 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester at the age of 81 years, two months and 16 days. Dick was raised in Alcester and graduated from Alcester High School. He married Marlys Berg on June 30, 1954. Dick worked for his father at Pete's Produce. He soon became the owner and worked there until two years ago. The couple lived in Alcester their entire married life where Dick was a member of the United Church of Christ. Following Marlys' death May 2, 2014 Dick resided at Morningside Care Center. In his younger years he liked hunting and fishing; more recently he enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing cards, especially Pinochle. He was a big Chicago Cubs fan. Dick and his good friend, Bob Carlson, had coffee together daily for over twenty years. His parents, wife, and sister, Donna Graff preceded him in death. Survivors include his four children, Heidi Zweifel, Todd (Deb) Hughes, Barry (Pam) Hughes and Steve (Belva) Hughes, all of Alcester; 10 grandchildren, Jaclyn (Jason) Thompson, Rochester, MN, Jessica (Matt) Larson, Sartell, MN, Jenna (Derek) Sinner, Webster, SD, Jake Hughes (Christina Kuperus), Sioux Falls, Justin (Christine) Hughes, Sioux Falls, Tricia (Jonah) King, Lincoln, NE, Adam Hughes, Sioux Falls, Cory (Mary) Hughes, Sioux Falls, A.J. (Caroline) Mockler, Northport, AL, and Joe Zweifel, Alcester; 18 great-grandchildren, Isaac, Eli, Alexis, Noah, Ty, Jonas, Hazel Rose, Hunter, Grant, Ana, Mia, Ian, Leia, Jack, Caroline, Hazel, Olivia and Marlys; brother-in-law, Allen Berg, Sioux Falls; sister-in-law Pat Berg, Alcester; and many relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2PM Friday, December 19, 2014 at the United Church of Christ in Alcester. Visitation with the family present will be 5-7PM Thursday at the church.
