Obituary

Rachel Ordell Larson was born on June 22, 1930, to Bent and Borgney Fredrikson of Hudson, SD. She graduated from Hudson High School and received her teaching qualifications from Springfield College and later a degree from Sioux Falls College. In 1954, she married David Larson and they had two children, Daniel and Sonja. Rachel taught in country schools around Hudson, Canton and Beresford before moving in to teach at the Beresford Elementary School. During this time she was also involved with both the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts. In 1972, the family moved to Melbourne, Australia, where Rachel taught until her retirement in 1991. Rachel loved her family. She took pride in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her second love was teaching and education, getting involved in all aspects of education and school, including playing sports and games with her students. She liked to make learning fun and followed that through to her grandchildren during many visits in the school holidays, and later with the great-grandchildren. She was very proud that her great-grandchildren learned to read at an early age and that they enjoyed reading. She enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, quilting and many other crafts. She also enjoyed travelling back to the states to visit family and her many friends. Rachel lost her battle to cancer in the early hours of August 8, 2013, at the age of 83 years. Her husband David was by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Anne Halverson; two brothers, Jakob Fredrikson and Burton Fredrikson. She is survived by her husband David of Melbourne, Australia; her son Daniel (Dee) of Australia, a daughter Sonja Nielsen (Ronnie) of Beresford; two grandchildren, Rueben Larson of Australia, Emma Stevens (Damon) of Australia; and two great-grandchildren, Ordell and Macie Stevens; and a sister Sally (Gene) Escher, of Canton, along with many nieces and nephews and other relatives and many friends. Memorial services will be held at the Hudson Lutheran Church at 2PM on Saturday, September 21, 2013.
