Obituary

Paul Eric Shubeck, 64, died Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at Central Church, 3102 W. Ralph Rogers Road, Sioux Falls, SD.  Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM Monday, November 18 at Central Church.

Paul Eric Shubeck, lovingly known as "Grandpa Bizzo", was born in 1955 to Fred and Carol Shubeck. Despite much hijinks and harassment of his future father-in-law/Chemistry teacher, he was allowed to graduate from Brookings High School in 1973. While there, he met and fell in love with his lifelong sweetheart, Carol Martin, whom he married November 23, 1973. He loved to tinker, was known as a "MacGyver" and could fix anything (from washing machines, to bull dozers), and supported his young wife welding boat docks. He graduated from SDSU in 1977 with a degree in Mechanized Ag. Following school, he taught High School Ag in Luverne, MN from 1978 to 1981. He then returned to farm the family homestead in Centerville, SD, where his mechanical ingenuity helped him to grow a small farm into a 1,000-acre operation utilizing old, dilapidated machinery most would scrap. For example, in his early 20's, he purchased grain bins and an elevator leg, damaged by a tornado, for $75.00 and rebuilt them; all continue to be utilized, by his son, on the farm today.

With a passion instilled by his parents, and later passed to his children, he believed a person would never regret their education. He received his Masters of Business Degree from the University of Sioux Falls in 1996; he utilized this education to assist in mediations of farm debt and other business ventures, including his contributions to ethanol and biodiesel development. He was very honored to have served in the furthering of agriculture interests on boards and committees including the U.S. Grains Council, SD Farm Bureau, and SD Corn Council. He, along with several good friends, and in coordination with various environmental and farm groups, was instrumental in developing the Wetlands Reserve Program. In later years, he enjoyed hosting the "Town and Country" radio show, encouraging development of renewable energy (Wind energy),  and, up until his death, was honored to have served as the appointed SD Farm Service Agency Director.

Paul was patient, creative, and determined; he often told his children, "You only say no to yourself". His family lovingly recalls his commendable optimism, responding to struggles and set-backs with humor and renewed resolve. His greatest life achievement, on the day of his death, was a love of family and faith in Jesus, lived and passed in legacy to his children.

Blessed to have shared in his years of life and laughter, were his wife of 46 years, Carol and children Mike Shubeck (Katelynn) of Rapid City, John Shubeck (Megan) of Centerville, Heidi Gillam (Jon) of Rapid City, Katie Clayton (Josh) of Centerville, and sister Mary Josko (Don) of Sioux Falls. His love of fun and teasing will be greatly missed by his 11.5 grandchildren and huge extended family, whom Paul loved to crowd into his home for Holidays.

Paul will join in heaven, his parents Fred and Carol Shubeck, and sister Ruth Shubeck.
