Obituary

Paul Alan Newberg was born in Alcester, SD on February 4, 1930 to Arthur and Florence (Peterson) Newberg.  He was a "full-blooded Swede" and very proud of his heritage.  He passed away on February 13, 2022 at the Akron Care Center at the age of 92 years, 9 days.

Paul graduated from Alcester High School in 1948.  While in high school, he met the love of his life, Eddie Leu Edwards.  They were married on September 1, 1950 at Big Springs Baptist Church.  Paul was drafted into the US Army in 1951.  He spent 18 months in Germany during the Korean War, serving as a cook for the troops.  He was discharged in 1953.  He was very proud of his military service and was a member of the Alcester VFW Post 6149.  Upon his discharge from the Army, he began to work for the railroad.  He and Eddie Leu lived in many different communities throughout the Midwest, following his job.  They settled in Wausa, NE in 1957.  Four children (Kyle, Kirk, Melia and Jewel) were born and raised in Wausa.  Paul worked for the local hatchery, then bought the local meat market.  He and Eddie Leu transitioned this into Newberg's Market, a grocery store.  He was quite famous for his Swedish potato bologna and Swedish meatballs.

While is Wausa, he was an active member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, where he served on the Deacon board, taught Sunday school, and sang in the choir.  One activity that he loved was bowling.  He bowled on a men's league, plus he entered father-son and father-daughter bowling tournaments with his children.  He always supported his children in their activities, whether it was football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, music, or swimming.  He loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Kansas City Chiefs, and all Major League baseball.

In 1978, the family moved to Akron, IA, where he managed a local grocery store.  He loved the grocery business so much that he continued to work at Maynard's Grocery Store in Akron until 2019.  He retired on his 89 th birthday.

Upon moving to Akron, he became a member of Big Springs Baptist Church.  He loved his church family.  He and Eddie Leu hosted many Bible studies in their home throughout the years.  He loved his Lord, Jesus Christ, and was a faithful prayer warrior.  He was an honest, quiet, encouraging man who loved his family and friends with all his heart.

He loved attending his grandchildren's activities too, such as football, wrestling, or dance.  He was so proud of each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

One moment that he truly loved and talked much about was celebrating his 60 th wedding anniversary in 2010, which was attended by many family members and friends.  The true sparkle of his eye, Eddie Leu, preceded him in death in 2012.

Paul is survived by his children, Kyle Newberg, Anaheim, CA, Kirk (Debbie) Newberg, Omaha, NE, Melia (Brian) Small, Akron, IA, and Jewel Authier, Sergeant Bluff, IA; grandchildren, Adam (Samantha) Small, Sioux Falls, SD, Tyler (Jenny) Small, Akron, IA, Shannon Finch, Akron, IA, Noel Newberg, Omaha, NE, Nels Newberg, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Levi Small, Akron, IA, and Skye Small, Akron, IA; great-grandchildren, Colby, Ashlynn, Wesley, and Ryker Small and Piper Finch; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, brothers, Daryl and Stuart; and grandson, Niles Newberg.
