Obituary

Patricia (Bonine) Jacobsen passed away on December 4th, 2023 after a lengthy battle with cancer at the Riverview Healthcare Center in Flandreau, SD. She lived a life of wide experience with many precious moments and worked a variety of different occupations. Patricia was born in Claremore, Oklahoma on April 30th, 1937. The growing family moved to South Dakota soon after where she enjoyed growing up on the family farm amidst rural surroundings. As a youth, she was a 10 year 4-H member.  She credited that organization and the many projects she participated in to developing her skills in sewing, canning, baking, leadership skills by demonstrations and showing beef and hogs.

She also won the Make-it-with-Wool contest, Regional Cherry pie baking contest, Voice of Democracy and won the Methodist Youth Fellowship Scholarship.

She graduated from Canton High School. In 1956 she was crowned South Dakota Dairy Princess. Patricia attended college, graduating from SDSU, Brookings, SD and then obtained her Master's degree at the University of the Pacific in California.

She was married to Dennis Jacobsen on September 1st, 1957 and it was during his residency to become a radiologist that she supported the young family by teaching high school English, and she also managed their cherry orchard.  They had three children:  David, Douglas and Kirsten.  Later she received her pilots license and would take the family on flights, navigating even the Rocky Mountains. She and her daughter Kirsten owned and operated a radio station in California.  Together they built the station and successfully fought to obtain a FAA license.

Patricia loved to travel. She was always willing to join a sibling or friend on a trip, the destination didn't really matter.  Another love was that of reading, which she did avidly and throughout her life. During the time she lived in Mexico, she welcomed visitors and shared the local sights and culture in the area. She treasured her time with her grandchildren. Many times, she brought them to the farm in South Dakota for a visit, attend a family celebration or a family reunion. She enjoyed sharing family traditions and heritage.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Marshall Ann and Beverly.

She is survived by her children David (Symbria), Douglas (Monique), Kirsten (Jason) Carlson, 13 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and siblings, Morris (Sarah) Bonine, Renee (Bill) Schultz, Linda Sue Offutt and many nieces and nephews.
