Obituary

Opal Elizabeth Sollman Fitzgerald was born November 18, 1916 to Charles and Lillie Sollman in Montrose, Missouri. She died April 15, 2012 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 95 years, 4 months and 27 days. At the age of two, Opal moved with her parents to Worthing, South Dakota then in 1929 to Beresford, South Dakota where she graduated from Beresford High School in 1933. It was there that Opal met a handsome musician, William (Bill) Matthew Fitzgerald. They were married on June 20, 1936, and chose Beresford as the place to raise their family. Throughout her married life Opal was a faithful member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church and active community volunteer. Many of her friendships developed through shared participation in various church and civic clubs, including the Beresford Extension Club, the Beresford Study Club, St. Theresa's Catholic Daughters, and the Altar Society. She served for fifteen years on the Library Board, taught catechism, and served as a Cub Scout den mother. Always productive, Opal's relaxation came from reading, gardening (especially her pink roses) and cooking. Opal's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by three children, Robert (Bob) Fitzgerald and wife Gayle of Raleigh, NC, Rosanne Yost of Beresford, SD (Fiancé Alan Kirts, McCook Lake, SD) and Richard (Dick) Fitzgerald and wife Daleen of Brookfield, WI - nine grandchildren, Paige Fitzgerald (Dan Froomkin) of Washington, DC, Chris Yost (Christine) of Sioux Falls, SD, Andrew Yost of Omaha, NE (Amy Baysinger, Sioux Falls, SD), Jesse Yost (Laura), Sioux Falls, SD, Matthew Yost (Amy Jo) of Avon, SD, Daniel Yost (Noemie) and Billy Yost (Gina) of Chicago, IL, Michael Fitzgerald (Jaime) of Brookfield, WI, and Brittany Fitzgerald of Milwaukee, WI. - four step grandchildren, Brooks Burleson, Cameron Burleson, Meredith Rix, and Gayle Johnson - six great-grandchildren, Max Fitzgerald Froomkin, Flyn and Ella Yost, Emma and Lydia Yost, and Avery and Chloe Fitzgerald, and two step great granddaughters, Holly Burleson and Haven Burleson. Opal is also survived by her sister Phyllis Larsen and husband Eldon of Canova, SD, and several nieces and nephews. Opal was preceded in death by her husband William (Bill) Fitzgerald and her parents, Charles and Lillie Sollman. A funeral mass will be held 10:00AM, Thursday, April 19, 2012 at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford with burial to follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6PM to 8PM with a wake service at 7:30 PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
