Olive L. Johnson was born October 28, 1922 on a farm near Alcester, South Dakota to Nick M. and Maggie (Hampton) Doty. She died January 28, 2015 at Sanford Hospital in Canton, SD at the age of 92 years and three months. Olive was raised in the rural farm home, the youngest of 10 children. She attended Cole Rural School and graduated from Alcester High School. She married Lloyd Arvid Johnson on December 13, 1941 in Pender, Nebraska and they went to farm with her parents. They purchased the Doty farm and continued to farm and raise their five children there. She worked as a nurse's aide at Morningside Care Center in Alcester for 25 years. Olive also managed Olive's Bloomers, a flower shop in Alcester, for a few years. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her four daughters, Adele Buum of Brookings, SD, Judy (David) Kiewel of Alcester, SD, Paulette (Ben) Ihm of Liberty, NY and Rebecca (Jody) Frye of North Sioux City, SD; one son, Vaughn (Jody) of Alcester, SD; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; and special friends, Axel and Amanda Ericson. Her parents, husband, two infant sons, son-in-law, Owen Buum, grandson, Paul Buum, five brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Burial will be 9:45AM Monday, February 2, 2015 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester with funeral services at 11AM at Alcester United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 2-4PM Sunday at the church with a prayer service at 3PM. The family requests memorials to the Alcester Food Pantry, the Alcester Summer Rec. Program or the Alcester Backpack Program.
