Norman T. "Norm" Nygaard was born November 13, 1925 in Beresford, South Dakota to Jacob and Sarah (Sabie) Nygaard. He died October 8, 2012 in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 86 years, 10 months and 25 days. Norm was raised and attended school in Beresford graduating from Beresford High School in 1943. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Beresford. Norm married Gloria Rime June 15, 1947. Together they raised their three children in Beresford. Norm worked as a painting contractor and owned and operated a variety store and a retail paint store in Beresford. Norm was active in his community, serving many years on the Beresford Volunteer Fire Department and the Beresford City Council. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. His surviving family includes his wife of 65 years, Gloria; daughter, Sandra Brust of Yorktown, VA; two sons, Jay Nygaard of Beresford and Scott Nygaard of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Sonjia (Jeremy) Moldenhauer and Matthew Brust; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Everett (Joan) Nygaard of Beresford. His parents, five brothers, Laurel, Robert, Joe, Ben and Doug and two sisters, Jeanette and Beulah preceded him in death. Memorial services will be held 11AM Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Visitation is 6-8PM Wednesday at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
