He attended one year of college at University of Montana Western, then he transferred to the University of Northem Colorado where he received his teaching degree to become a band director. Norm directed the church choir at Lands Lutheran Church for 20 years with Theola accompanying on the piano. He then worked for the music store in Rock Valley, IA where he called on schools in the area and would also repair instruments there. When the store closed, he went to work at Weatherwax's, a men's clothing store in Sioux Falls. When that store closed, he worked at Macy's in the men's department. After he retired, Norm would work a few hours a week at Casey's, Jet Truck Plaza and later at Fiesta Foods.
He took classes at University of South Dakota for counseling with a focus on chemical dependency. He volunteered at Tall Grass counseling individuals struggling with substance abuse for many years. He attended AA meetings in Akron, IA weekly. He had made many good friends there.
