His early education was at the Gothland rural school. He then attended and graduated from Beresford High School in 1956. He continued his education at SDSU in Brookings obtaining an associates degree in agriculture in 1958. Upon graduation, he returned to the family farm and began his lifelong career as a farmer. With his young family he looked forward to August vacations in the Black Hills and Minnesota. Birthday and holiday gatherings were always special. One of the highlights was the Christmas bible reading of Jesus' birth. He was an active spectator at his children and grandchildren's activities, attending many sporting events and concerts though the years. Besides being a full-time farmer, Norman also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golf. Norman and Karen enjoyed their many travels and pinochle games with Carol and Orville Sorlie.
