Norma Jean Thomson was born March 29, 1946 in Corsica, SD to Ivan and Martha (Vanden Hoek) Muckey. She passed away on October 29, 2015 at her home in Centerville, SD at the age of 69. Norma graduated from Dakota Christian High School in 1964. Norma married John McDowell on May 26, 1966. He died January 9, 1968 while serving his country in Vietnam. After spending a year at Dordt College she began her teaching career at Toft country school near Corsica and Loneman country school near Armour. She attended several colleges earning a Bachelor's Degree and later a Master's Degree in Education. On August 15, 1971 she married Keith Thomson. Norma was a middle school teacher in Vermillion and then went back to school and earned a Master's Degree in Administration. She was the elementary principal in Centerville from 1985 until her retirement. Keith passed away in 2000 and Norma continued to reside in Centerville until the present time. Her survivors include a son Jamie (Sue) McDowell, Sioux Falls; two granddaughters, Sasha and Maya McDowell, Sioux Falls; a sister, Karen (Jerry) Wattier, Pierre, SD; a brother, Scott (Sheryl) Muckey, Corsica; three nieces, Erin Muckey, New Haven, CT, Michelle Wattier, Waterloo, IA and Amanda (Tim) Schaeffer, Tea, SD; a nephew Erik Muckey, Sioux Falls; and many other relatives and friends. Norma was preceded in death by her parents Ivan and Martha Muckey, husbands John McDowell and Dr. Keith Thomson and her sister Donna Riggert. A memorial reception with family present will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 from 2PM to 4PM at Wass Funeral Home in Centerville.
