Nick Sassel was born June 6, 1914 in Sioux Falls, SD to parents Emil and Anna (Buthala) Sassel. He died June 15, 2012 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 98. Nick was raised in the Beresford area and attended Cleveland grade school. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Weiland on September 9, 1941 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Emmett township. They farmed south of Beresford for 43 years and raised their family before retiring and moving into Beresford. They enjoyed many bus tours and traveling after their retirement. Nick was on the Emmett township board as a clerk for 23 years. He worked for the A.S.C.S as a field manager for 20 years. Nick was an avid sports fan since he was 10 years old, following the Washington Senators-now the Minnesota Twins. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football with his loyalty beginning by listening to the Notre Dame vs. Army game in 1928 when they "won one for the Gipper". He enjoyed baseball, bowling, and playing golf. After moving to town his two rounds of golf with friends became his daily job. He loved playing cards, especially pinochle, with friends and family. He always had a deck of cards in his pocket ready to play his grandsons at all family gatherings. He enjoyed the Notre Dame football season, watching the games every Saturday with his grandsons. He loved being around his special joys, his wife and family. Among those who survive and shared his life are his two daughters, Diane (Clark) Wells, Alcester and Marilyn (Herb) Dreeszen, Sioux Falls; four grandsons, Todd (Jessica) Wells, Sioux Falls, Chad (Ginger) Wells, Canistota, Bryan (Beth) Wells, Sioux City, IA and Brent (Heidi) Dreeszen, Aurora, SD, one granddaughter, Lisa (Jim) Dougherty, Sioux Falls; 18great grandchildren, Ariahna, Aidan, Collin, Tyler, Ashley, Lauren, Elivia, Nicholas, Elise, Lincoln and Noah Wells; Nathan, Seth, Emily and Hannah Dreeszen; and James, Joshua, and Amanda Dougherty. Also surviving are Nick's one sister Violet Toth, Excondido, CA and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00AM, Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Beresford, with burial to follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery, rural Beresford.
