Myrtle D. Hendrickson Thormodsgaard passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2006 at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, SD at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 27 days. Myrtle was born November 4, 1920 on a farm near Beresford, SD to parents Jodmer and Inga (Johnson) Hendrickson. After graduating from high school at Augustana Academy in 1938, she went on to earn her teaching certificate at Northern College in Aberdeen. A brief career as a country schoolteacher was followed by marriage to Nels Thormodsgaard on December 26, 1941. Before the end of 1943, Nels was in Europe serving his country during WWII, and Myrtle was raising their son, Neil, born eight days after Nels shipped out. When the war ended in 1945, the couple began farming and raising a family near Alcester. In addition to being a devoted and loving Christian mother, Myrtle also worked as a secretary, a factory worker and a salesperson over the years. Myrtle was baptized and confirmed at Romsdal Lutheran Church and later became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in the womens group. She loved flowers and hated weeds. Music brought joy, both as a listener and as a singer. She was a proud member of the Trinity-Romsdal Choir for many years. Surviving her are her husband of almost 65 years, Nels of Beresford, SD; her children: Kathy Osvog and husband Dave of Parker, CO, Glen Thormodsgaard of Aurora, CO, Rod Thormodsgaard of Brookings, SD and Vicky Thormodsgaard of San Rafael, CA; Special Person (family) Donna Cooper, Englewood, CO; 5 grandchildren: Kari Dennison and husband Gregg of Canon City, CO, Jeff Thormodsgaard of Denver, CO, Gary Thormodsgaard of Aurora, CO, Jason Osvog of Pacific Palisades, CA and Alysa Osvog of West Palm Beach, FL; 2 great grandchildren: Lily and Laura Dennison; and her sister Jean Wagnon of Seattle, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Neil, 2 brothers, Jewel and Don Hendrickson and sister Ione Smith Funeral services will be 2PM, Wednesday, September 6, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hudson, SD with burial at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM with family present from 7PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
