Mildred Evelyn "Evy" Cotton Hogen was born June 12, 1920 in Beresford , South Dakota to Dr. Daniel and Mildred (McDonald) Cotton. She died Friday, December 28, 2012 at Bethesda of Beresford at the age of 92 years, six months and 16 days. Funeral services will be 10AM Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 1, 2013 from 4-8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 5-7PM. Evy lived most of her life in Beresford. After graduating from Beresford High School she attended Iowa State University in Ames, IA obtaining her Bachelor of Science in Dietetics in 1942. She married Lowell E. Hogen March 21, 1943. Evy followed Lowell, who was in the service, to Lawton , OK and Ft. Sill , TX until he was sent to war. At the end of WWII they returned to Beresford to raise their family. In 1969 Evy became the dietician for Bethesda of Beresford from which she retired from in June of 1998. She also did dietetic work at nursing homes in Alcester and Viborg for several years. She dedicated years of volunteer work to activities/groups where children were involved. In 1949, she joined the Girl Scouts of America, serving 51 years where she was a Troop Leader, Day Camp Director, Neighborhood Chairman, Girl Scout Board member and as an adult trainer. Evy was also a Cub Scout Den Mother. She served as a teacher and Sunday school superintendent at Emmanuel Lutheran Church . She was also an active member of the Eastern Star and the Beresford Study Club. Evy became Beresford Public Library librarian in 1972 after serving on the Library Board for several years. She gave leadership in the planning and building of the new library. She served the community for 30 years before retiring in 2002. Survivors include her daughter, Vicki Gross and her husband, Gene, of Ames, IA ; son, Mark Hogen and his wife, Vicki, of Hayden, ID ; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, Lowell, sister, Carolyn Cotton and brother, Daniel Cotton, Jr. preceded her in death.
