Obituary

Funeral services for Mildred will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at Alcester United Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Mildred Edith Dodrill Dobberstein was born October 25, 1918 at her home in Cass County, Nebraska to parents Eugene Milton and Julia (Mayer) Dodrill and entered into her death on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 88 years, 6 months, and 28 days. Millie attended school in Waverly and Eagle, Nebraska and graduated from Eagle High School in 1936. She attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics Education in 1941. Following college, Millie taught home economics and science at Alcester High School from 1941-1944. On August 17, 1944 she married Ervin Dobberstein, the Alcester agriculture teacher, in Lincoln, Nebraska. The couple lived at Bolling Field near Washington, DC where Erv served in the Army Air Corps and their daughter, Betty, was born. After Ervs discharge in 1946, they moved back to Alcester where Erv continued to teach and son, Arthur, was born. Millie devoted herself to her life as a mother, wife and church and community member. Millie served as the Alcester City Librarian from 1962-1980 and was Alcester Employee of the Year in 1980. She was active in a garden club, the RLD Study Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Millie enjoyed hobbies of sewing and quilting, ceramics, painting, antiquing and refinishing old furniture, and gardening during her lifetime. Millie was an active member of the Alcester United Church of Christ, serving in many capacities. She provided years of leadership in the Womens Fellowship and Faith Circle. She co-chaired the 125th anniversary celebration of the church in 2002 and was part of the churchs quilting group. Millie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ervin, brother George Dodrill, sisters Mary Sampson and Mabel Jacoby, and grandson Adam Cooke. Among those who survive and gratefully shared her life are daughter, Betty, and her husband, Donald Cooke of Minnetonka, Minnesota; son, Arthur and his wife, Margo, of Naples, Florida; three grandchildren, Matthew Cooke and wife Kim, Christopher Dobberstein and wife Joanna, and Anne Dobberstein; and many nieces and nephews.
