Michael George Seivert was born August 5, 1947 in Tyler, Minnesota to Francis "Dick" and Mary (Culhane) Seivert. He died suddenly December 5, 2017 in Alcester, SD at the age of 70 years and four months.
Mike attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School and graduated from Elkton High School in 1965. He attended General Beadle College, now Dakota State University, in Madison, SD where he graduated with his teaching degree in 1969. He married Jean Ann Kolbeck on July 19, 1969.
He started his teaching at Oldham, SD and then taught for 15 years at Hudson, SD from 1970 -1985. Mike started at Alcester-Hudson in 1985 and had worked there since. After retiring from teaching full time in 2010 he continued to work for the Alcester-Hudson School District as Athletic Director, Junior High football coach, Pre-School bus driver and did football field maintenance.
Mike was a volunteer for the fire departments in Hudson and Alcester, was a Hunt Safe instructor for Hudson and Alcester and taught Drivers Education. He was a baseball umpire, and also coached youth baseball. Mike was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in organizing and running the Knights of Columbus Alcester-Hudson and Beresford Free Throw Contest. He sold fireworks for SD Fireworks and for the Knights of Columbus in Beresford. Mike was a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, saying he was going to catch "Walter" at his fishing pond. During the summer Mike painted homes with his children, and provided these opportunities for other kids as well. He was always concerned about his family first and his "second" family, the kids at the Alcester-Hudson Schools. He wanted the less fortunate to have a meal to eat and a Christmas gift.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 48 years, Jean; four children, Kristin Leigh Seivert of Alcester, Michael David Seivert of Beresford, Katie Ann Seivert of Alcester and Matthew James Seivert and his wife, Bonnie of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Sophie Grace Seivert, Lily Grace Seivert and Boone Matthew Seivert. Also surviving are his two brothers, Francis Seivert of Elkton, SD and Dick Seivert of LeMars, IA; two nephews, Steven Kellen and Mark Kellen; and two nieces, Karen Kasper and her husband, Jim and Susan Beaman and her husband, John. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Mary Ellen Kellen.
Visitation will be 5-7PM on Sunday, Dec. 10th at the Alcester-Hudson Elementary School gymnasium with a prayer service at 7PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10AM Monday, Dec. 11th at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Beresford. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester overlooking the athletic complex where he spent so much time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alcester-Hudson Mike Seivert Memorial Fund to be used for school children in need.
