Michael Milton Hansen, 71, passed away Sunday, December 15, 2019 at his home in Alcester, SD.  Some knew Mike as "the camera guy" from his photographs of sporting events at Alcester-Hudson High School.

Michael was born on February 9, 1948 in Missoula, MT to Army First Sergeant Milton Chester and Mary Louise (Cunningham) Hansen.  Mike enjoyed the frequent moving so typical of a military family, until his father died when Mike was only nine.  He and his mother settled in El Paso, TX, where he graduated high school and attended some college before joining the United States Navy in 1969.

Mike served four years as an Aviation Ordnanceman and was stationed in San Diego and aboard aircraft carrier, USS Ranger.  Seven months of his time at sea were spent off the coast of Vietnam in the final months of that war.  After his discharge from active duty, Mike joined the Naval Reserves where he spent another fifteen years, reaching the rank of First-Class Petty Officer.

After active duty, Mike completed junior college and moved back to San Diego.  There, he worked as a draftsman, electro-mechanical designer and drawing checker for several defense contractors.

Never married, Mike retired in 2010 and moved to Alcester to be with the remainder of his family.  While in Alcester, he joined the VFW and loved the small-town living.

Mike is survived by his cousin, Robert (Esther) Berg of Sioux Falls and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and cousins, Rodney Berg, Marlys Hughes, and Allen Berg.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester, SD.
