Merritt Roy Webster was born July 4, 1946 in Huron, SD. He died January 8, 2011 in Canton, SD at the age of 64 after a long battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Delila (Ochsner); two daughters, Danielle (David) Vlastuin of Ellsworth, WI and Darcie Webster of Ellsworth, WI; four grandsons, Casey and Jordan Vlastuin and Jacob and Joshua Webster. Also surviving are his parents, Merritt and Marjorie (Nelson) Webster of Alpena; sister, Linda Schaffer of Denver, CO; mother-in-law, Viola Ochsner of Alpena and numerous nieces, nephews as well as other family and many loving friends.
Roy graduated from Alpena High School in 1964. He received his Bachelor's Degree from SDSU and his Master's Degree from USD. He taught at Castlewood High School from 1968-1974. He taught at Alcester High School from 1974-2010. Roy was a gifted teacher and influenced the lives of many young people. He took his students to the National Science Quiz Bowl in Washington, DC.
Roy worked for the Game and Fish Department in Watertown and owned three businesses over the years; Coteau Blasting, RJ Construction Company and Roy Webster Computer Consult.
He loved camping and Geocaching with his family and friends. In the summer of 2009, he and Delila were campground hosts at Union Grove. In his earlier years he was an avid hunter. Roy also enjoyed photography.
Funeral services will be 1PM Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011 at the Alcester-Hudson Elementary gymnasium. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens south of Huron, SD on Wednesday at 11AM. Visitation will be 3:30-8PM Monday at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester with the family present from 6-8PM.
