Merle married Elaine Swanson in 1996. They made their home in Winner where he worked for Dakota Pride and Country Pride Elevator. He later took Electrician training and worked for Bob Kucera, who Merle thought was a great person to work for, until ill health forced him to retire. Merle spent the last year of his life living with his mother in Beresford so he could receive medical treatments at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls.
