Melvin Claus Nothdurft passed away at his home February 10, 2015. Melvin was born July 25th, 1931 to Hans Johann and Minnie Louise Grassman Nothdurft. Melvin received his education in the Larchwood area country schools and worked on various family farms. Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Aug 31, 1951. He was stationed in Korea and trained as a medic. Melvin received the United Nations Medal, Republic of Korea War Service medal, and the Korean Unit citation (two battle stars). Melvin married Dorthy Jean Voegeli August 18, 1954. Melvin and Dorthy settled in the Beresford area and started farming in 1955. They settled their own farm in 1962. Mel had a trucking business over the years hauling livestock, corn, and beans. He enjoyed doing various custom work and started a corn shelling business. Mel embodied the American Farmer. He loved the land and had a way with animals, from pets to livestock. Mel valued honesty, integrity, a good sense of humor and helping others. Melvin served as a leader in the following organizations: SD Livestock Feeders, American Legion, VFW, 4-H, Beresford Zion United Methodist Church, Board of Directors for Central Livestock Association. He is survived by his wife for over 60 years, Dorthy; children, Rick (Roxy) of Centerville, Dan (Roxie) of Jefferson, June (David) Mohr of London, Ohio, Jill (Paul) Winter of Rapid City, and Dale of Beresford, 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, brother, Ben; sister, Betty, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mel was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Jeffrey, and his brothers, Frederick, Hans, and Jonathon. Funeral services will be 2PM Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Beresford Zion United Methodist Church. Visitation is 3-6PM Saturday at the church with the family present from 3-5PM and a prayer service at 5PM.
