Melvin Falk was the second of four children born to parents Martin and Anna (Andersen Sjonost) Falk on July 22, 1911 in Harding County, SD. He passed away on August 18, 2006 at the Centerville Good Samaritan Center at the age of 95 years and 26 days. When he was five years old, his mother passed away. His father, unable to care for four small children, sent the children to foster homes. Shortly after that, Melvin came to live at the Bethesda Childrens Home in Beresford, SD. At the age of 16, he left the Childrens Home and worked on the Ole Thormodsgaard farm near Alcester, SD. Melvin continued to work his way through Augustana Academy in Canton, SD and graduated in 1933. He continued to work on farms in the Alcester area. On August 30, 1940 he married Berthine Thormodsgaard. A daughter was born to them on August 30, 1943. In 1946 the family moved to Beresford. Melvin worked for the State Highway Department for 25 years, retiring in July of 1976. Berthine died in 1991 and Melvin continued to live in Beresford until 2003, when he moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville. Melvin was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford where he taught Sunday School, served on the church board and assisted in many other areas. He is survived by a daughter, Mary (Jerry) White, Centerville; four grandchildren, Michele (Doug) Norling, Centerville, Jeff (Lynn) White, Canton, Candice (Matt) Mueller, Harrisburg, and Randy (Stacy) White, Sioux Falls; three great grandchildren, Amy and Tim Norling and Shayla White; sister Gladys Hammond, Sandstone, MN and several nieces and nephews. His parents, wife, and two sisters, Alma McFarlane and Mildred McClure preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 2PM, Monday, August 21 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Beresford. Visitation will be Sunday from 5PM to 8PM with family present from 7PM to 8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford.
